Ground Control Strategy: Beyond Grappling

In this video, we explore newaza (ground fighting) strategy through the lens of Jukido Jujutsu and its self-defense orientation. While many grappling techniques are shared across systems — judo, jujutsu, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, sambo, wrestling, and others — the strategy, priorities, and context behind those techniques can differ dramatically. That distinction matters. This discussion examines how the classical Japanese approaches to groundwork were often filtered through concerns of real-world self-defense priorities such as: -Weapon awareness (we incorporate knives, by surprise, into positional sparring later in the video) -Multiple attackers -Mobility and reversibility -Control -Returning to standing position when appropriate. The video includes both technical demonstration and broader discussion on how a Jukidoka should think about newaza strategically rather than simply collecting techniques or positions. Topics include: -Positional priorities in self-defense -Why “winning” a grappling exchange is not always the same as surviving an encounter -The importance of mobility and awareness -Osaekomi-waza (control positions) within a broader tactical framework -Why context changes everything (always be aware of their hands) Ground fighting is an important component of a complete martial arts system... but like all aspects of combat, it must be understood within the environment and circumstances in which it is being applied. Position matters. Awareness matters more. Train broadly. Think critically. Stay aware. 📘 For those interested in the historical development of jujutsu and judo in the West: The Founding of Jujutsu & Judo in America: https://a.co/d/05oJsvYO #Jujutsu #Newaza #SelfDefense #Judo #GroundFighting #MartialArts #JukidoJujitsu #Grappling #Osaekomi #Combatives
