¿Y si el idioma nos condiciona la vida?

❓ Do languages determine or influence our thoughts and actions? ✅ The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis has two versions: the strong one states that language determines our lives, and the weak one states that language influences our lives, but is not the determining factor. Language not only serves to describe the world; it can also subtly influence how we perceive it and the decisions we make every day. In this video, we explore the linguistic hypothesis that language influences—not determines—thought, using examples ranging from the everyday to the surprising. These include research linking how certain languages mark (or fail to mark) the difference between present and future with saving habits and health, and communities like the Kuuk Thaayorre, who orient themselves using cardinal directions instead of left and right and maintain a constant mental compass. We also see how language directs attention to different things: in one experiment, English speakers focus more on the shape of objects, while Mayan speakers prioritize the material. The second part delves into even more unsettling territory: how your decision-making changes when you think in a foreign language. The same dilemma about an illness and two medications produces different choices if framed in terms of “lives saved” or “deaths,” but that difference disappears when the answer is given in a non-native language, as if emotional distance reduces bias. From there, we explore how bilingualism can modify self-concept, the perception of time (distance versus volume), and even the adjectives we attribute to objects based on grammatical gender, with measurable effects on memory. And yet, not everything is relative: we conclude with the Kiki and Buba experiment, where collective intuition is repeated across cultures and languages, reminding us that, however much language may incline us in one direction, there are also patterns that seem to be "factory-made." How much of what you think is your own... and how much is whispered to you by your language?
