Präsentation eines restaurierten Peugeot 604 V6 SL, 1978
A customer told us about a Peugeot 604 in Carcassonne that he owned and had parked 33 years ago. The car, built in 1978, was taken to his father's authorized Peugeot workshop in 1985 with engine failure at 43,265 kilometers to have its engine replaced. After a new replacement engine was installed, the customer was unable to pay the bill, and at some point the vehicle became the property of the authorized Peugeot workshop. The car has never been driven since the engine was replaced, or rather, it remained parked in the former workshop's hall for those 33 years. In the meantime, all the assets from this workshop belonged to our customer, who is the son of the previous workshop owner. This son moved to the USA in the mid-1980s, founded a company, and was able to build a certain amount of wealth for himself. His early influence on Peugeot has never left him, and today he owns a considerable collection of historic Peugeot automobiles. Our client frequently travels to Berlin for business, and for some time now, we have been servicing a few of his historic Peugeots, which he has stored in Berlin. He had repeatedly talked about the 604 lying dormant in Carcassonne, and one day he commissioned us to retrieve and restore it. He knew that restoring a Peugeot 604 would cost many times more than its value, but he wanted a vehicle in the absolute best condition, and he was treating himself to it as a present for his 60th birthday, which he celebrated at the Classic Remise in Berlin. Time was running out until his birthday, and we had two employees fully dedicated to the task. We began restoring the car on January 8, 2018, and the restoration was completed on June 22, 2018. Our two employees each spent a good 750 hours, totaling a good 1,500 hours. That we were able to complete such a job without interruption is certainly an exceptional case, or rather, it was planned accordingly in advance. However, the fact that everything went more or less smoothly, with no delays due to problems sourcing spare parts or with subcontractors such as the paint shop and the upholsterer, is an extremely rare occurrence. The vehicle's generally good condition caused hardly any unforeseen difficulties, a rare occurrence. While we did discover traces of an accident to the side behind the right front wheel during the work, removing them was not a major challenge. The condition of the engine confirmed that the story about the replacement engine being installed 33 years ago was true. After removing the cylinder heads, the newly restored interior of the engine was visible. The engine was not opened any further, but was naturally resealed and all ancillary components replaced. At the client's request, the restored seats were no longer upholstered in light gray velour, but rather in light gray leather and fitted with seat heating. All windows were replaced with green heat-insulating glass, and original alloy wheels with Michelin TRX tires were installed. The car was completely disassembled, except for the headliner and the engine, which was deemed to be in good condition. All chassis components were sandblasted, repainted, and then fitted with new bushings, shock absorbers, springs, and the like. All brake components were replaced, and new brake lines and a new wiring harness were installed. Headlights, turn signals, taillights, and much more were replaced with so-called new old stock parts. There was one problem, however. The plastic of the dashboard cover is deformed at the cutouts for the air vents, or rather, the edges of these cutouts appear to have swollen. This is difficult to fix, but this deformation means that the air vents no longer fit properly. One of our employees had the idea of making new air vents and then "simply" making them a little larger to cover the deformed edges of the cutouts in the dashboard. Our employee then created a dataset of the original ventilation grilles and modified the shape as required using CAD. The new, larger ventilation grilles were then manufactured using a 3D printer. The result in the car is absolutely impressive, and if you don't point out the change, no one will notice. The result is exactly what our customer wanted. His 604, which has been sitting idle for 33 years, shines in mint condition and could very well be the best example ever.
