Born in the highest village in Lebanon in 1828, Charbel walked away from his family at twenty-three to become a monk, and spent the rest of his life pursuing a silence so complete that those who knew him said he seemed "drunk with God." After his death in 1898, his tomb became the site of healings that the Catholic Church would later formally recognize — and in December 2025, became the first place a sitting pope ever knelt alone in prayer.
