The Atatürk portrait painted by artist Mustafa Aydemir in 1982 in Erzincan while serving his military duty, alongside 3,000 fellow soldiers at the foot of the Keşiş Mountains, has had its paint peeling off, and the concrete used has turned into sand. Artist Mustafa Aydemir, who restored and recreated the portrait, blamed the contractor, saying, “All our efforts were in vain. Despite all my warnings during the construction, the portrait quickly became unrecognizable due to the contractor's errors. The portrait, on which we invested so much effort, has practically turned into sand. The portrait we created under the most impossible conditions remained in its place for 41 years, but the portrait we restored, after much effort and time, couldn't even last a year.” Due to the rapid deformation of the portrait, Artist Aydemir filed a lawsuit against the company, and the restoration process has become a court case. Artist Mustafa Aydemir, who came to Erzincan to attend the court hearing, stated that the portrait needs to be restored and that they are seeking a solution to the process. Renovation work began on August 26, 2023, at Ata Tepe on Keşiş Mountain in Erzincan. After two months of work, the portrait was placed in reinforced steel and the renovation was completed. The portrait was ready for the 100th anniversary of the Republic on October 29, 2023. Aydemir sued the contractor, alleging construction errors and the use of substandard materials during the renovation, resulting in the concrete melting and paint peeling. The Atatürk portrait, created in 1982, covers an area of ​​7,500 square meters, measures 176 meters in length, and was made using 600 tons of stone, 210 tons of mortar, and 200 tons of paint. It holds the distinction of being the largest portrait in the world and is also one of the 100 most extreme art pieces selected by the Smithsonian Museum in the United States. Although the portrait had been restored over time, it had deteriorated, faded, and become deformed due to weather conditions. Painter Mustafa Aydemir undertook further restoration work. In 2023, Aydemir visited Erzincan and, through meetings with the Erzincan Governorship, the Provincial Special Administration, and the Municipality, initiated efforts to have the artwork placed in reinforced steel for durability. With the contributions of Governor Hamza Aydoğdu, Mayor Bekir Aksun, and the Provincial Special Administration, a construction site was established in the Ata Tepe region. The costs for necessary materials such as concrete, steel, and paint were covered by sponsoring companies from cities like Istanbul and Izmir, thanks to Mustafa Aydemir's initiative. Steel piles were driven into the ground, concrete was poured, and painting and landscaping work was carried out. The portrait was completed and unveiled on October 29, 2023, the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey. Promotional totems were erected in Dörtyol Cumhuriyet Square, the city center, and in the area where the portrait is located. However, after a year and a half, the portrait had become almost unrecognizable. The portrait, which has become one of the symbols of Erzincan, needs its concrete structure reinforced, repainted, the area where it is located protected to prevent further damage, and its lighting renovated.
