Two Tapes: The Boy's Brother Said Sister Did It, Then Mom Did | Pt 11 | WI v. Dikeman

Two recorded interviews. Three weeks apart. The 8-year-old gave the forensic interviewer two different accounts of who hurt his brother. Danielle Swedberg has been doing forensic interviews of children since 2003, trained at Cornerhouse in Minneapolis. Family and Children's Center in La Crosse called her in on a Sunday to interview Major Heallerud the day after Alex was found dead. He was 8. Three weeks later she sat down with him again. The State played both videos for the jury before Major took the stand. What Swedberg was told before each interview is what the defense built its cross around. She did not know Dikeman was a suspect. She was not told Derek had been physically abusive or that videos existed of his violence. She was not told the supervising sergeant had asked the family to stop talking to Major before the first interview. Watch how the defense plants each piece for when Major takes the stand. --- WATCH WITH JUSTICE 23:25 to 1:07:14 - First interview plays. February 12, 2023, the day after Alex was found dead. Eight-year-old Major tells Swedberg his sister Aria pushed Alex down the stairs. He says nothing about his mother bending Alex's leg. 1:11:12 to 2:38:33 - Second interview plays. Three weeks later the story has moved. Now Major says his mother bent Alex's leg in her room while choking him. Aria is gone from the account. 2:41:01 to 2:46:36 - Cross opens with the methodology concession chain. No process guarantees a true response. Children can be cued, confused by time frames, or describe behavior they saw in siblings. The defense plants each premise. 2:48:32 to 2:51:00 - The Derek piece. Defense walks Swedberg through videos and incidents she was never told about. Derek abusive across the relationship. Derek on camera screaming at Alex. She is hearing all of it for the first time on the stand. 2:58:32 to 3:00:30 - The school food story. Major told Swedberg his mother got mad at Alex for using ranch and ketchup at school. Defense asks the obvious follow-up: how would mom know what happened at school. Swedberg accepted Major's no-answer anyway. 3:01:37 to 3:02:35 - The briefing gap. Sergeant Williams told the family to stop talking to Major before the first interview. Swedberg is hearing it for the first time on the witness stand. --- COMPLETE CASE COVERAGE justiceisaprocess.com SUBSCRIBE for daily trial coverage and hit the notification bell so you never miss testimony.
