Why These Natural Springs in Florida are Suddenly Turning Black

For centuries, Florida's springs—Ginnie, Peacock, Wakulla—produced water so crystalline that divers could see 100 feet down as if through open air. Today, many of these springs are turning black, and it's not pollution. This original documentary explores the Floridan Aquifer—a massive, pressurized limestone system beneath Florida—and the hidden mechanism that's reversing the flow of our clearest freshwater springs. When tropical storms swell Florida's blackwater rivers (the Suwannee, Santa Fe), they increase surface water pressure above the spring vents. If the aquifer's internal pressure has been weakened by drought or heavy pumping, the balance flips: the dark, tannic river water physically siphons backward into the spring, turning it black for months. But tannins are only part of the story. We also examine how nitrogen and phosphorus runoff from suburban lawns, agriculture, and septic systems feed explosive cyanobacteria blooms (Lyngbya) that choke out native eelgrass, starving manatees and converting crystal-clear spring floors into dark, filamentous carpets.
