Codenamed "Asylum", the script was written by Andrew Kevin Walker and Akiva Goldsman. This film would have been an attempt to revitalize the Batman & Superman franchises by pitting the two heroes against each other for the first time on the big screen. Wolfgang Petersen was set to direct with a Summer 2004 release. Warner Bros., however, would later cancel the project in favor of Batman Beyond - another project that would ultimately be abandoned.
