It was developed in Russia in the second half of the 18th and early 19th centuries through complex crossbreeding involving Arabian, Danish, Dutch, Mecklenburg, Friesian, and other breeds. The Orlov Trotter was named after its creator, Count Alexei Orlov-Chesmensky. The history of the Orlov Trotter began in 1776, when Count Orlov brought a very beautiful Arabian stallion, Smetanka, from Turkey. He was purchased for the enormous sum of 60,000 silver rubles from the Turkish Sultan and, under military guard, was transported overland to Russia for two years.
