They Brought Back the Dire Wolf — But Ancient DNA Says It Was Never a Wolf!

For more than a century, the dire wolf was dismissed as a bigger gray wolf, and the richest fossil haul on Earth, over 3,600 from the La Brea Tar Pits, seemed to prove it. Then ancient DNA rewrote the story. A 2021 study in Nature found the dire wolf (Aenocyon dirus) split from living wolves nearly 6 million years ago and never interbred with them. In 2025, Colossal Biosciences claimed to bring it back, but what they made were gene-edited gray wolves. The forensic case for why it was never a wolf, and still isn't back.
