Pakistan : champs libre aux madrasas les plus radicales... #FOCUS

PAKISTAN: Education in Pakistan: Free rein for the most radical madrasas... In Bara, a suburb of Peshawar, posters have appeared on the walls, pasted up by the Taliban. They threaten parents with this order written in bold: "Give one of your sons to a madrasa or pay us €3,000." Over the past five years, bombs from religious fundamentalists have destroyed more than a thousand schools in Pakistan. This violence is encouraging parents to no longer send their children to public schools but to madrasas that have been spared the attacks. Some madrasas are known to be run by clerics close to the Taliban, and millions of young Pakistanis attend them. FOCUS on radical madrasas in Pakistan. In a country where only 2% of the budget is allocated to public education and where the Taliban have been targeting non-Quranic schools for years (thousands of schools have been destroyed, with a preference for those that serve girls), a growing number of parents prefer to educate their children in madrasas spared from the violence. The program: endless repetition of suras, no critical thinking, and constant glorification of jihad (imagine the Pakistan of tomorrow...). A sign of the Pakistani Taliban's propensity to resort to racketeering and other mafia-like tactics: posters were recently posted in the Peshawar region, near the Afghan border: "If you want to educate your child somewhere other than a madrasa, pay us €3,000 and we'll leave you alone..." It just goes to show that fundamentalism goes very well with business sense... Focus by Taha Siddiqui and Kamal Abdourahim. A long-form report is deciphered by its author and the news presenter.
