Acer G245HQ Display – Backlight Fault.

This is the third time the same capacitors have failed in the backlight power supply. Other surrounding components tested OK accepting the two transformers for the high voltage backlight drive were not tested under working conditions. Previously, the 10pF 3kV had been replaced. These proved to have failed again. Is this a case of “fake components” not meeting their specification regards working voltage? This time each 10pF capacitor was replaced with two 20pF 3kV in series to give 10pF and hopefully increase the voltage rating beyond 3kV. Will it survive for another 3 months? Will this fix it for longer? Who knows? It is now up and running again and working just fine! My mistake is buying unbranded components on ebay and the like. Electronics for me is a hobby, if I was doing this professionally I would purchase from a reliable electronics components distributor. The online market place is flooded with substandard components, probably manufactures rejects that don’t meet production tolerances. For instance the 3kV limit relates to DC working. The AC limit is much lower, probably around 500v ac. This is were buying branded items that publish data sheets for their components tells the story, for instance: Capacitance value and tolerance, working voltage and temperature ranges. All these factors, and more, come into play when designing equipment for production. But how often it is ignored by hams like me? Almost always! Sometimes I’m lucky, and sometimes I’m not. I only do this for fun these days. In industry - a poor choice of components does result in very costly mistakes! PS. Links at end of the video, one is related to repair of this monitor.
