As you walk along this path, you encounter a small, pure white church that preserves the memories of the past. It is ‘Gusan Catholic Church,’ a sanctuary that warmly embraces people’s souls and a registered cultural heritage of Gyeonggi Province. Behind the church lies ‘Misa Hangang Park,’ situated like a backyard, offering warm comfort to residents living amidst the arid urban landscape. The Gusan area was a place of deep faith where the entire village developed into a Catholic community after Saint Anthony Kim Seong-woo and his brothers embraced Catholicism and zealously preached the Gospel in the 1830s. It is said that even amidst severe persecution and martyrdom, their faith did not fade but rather maintained an even stronger communal bond. In 1956, when the chaos of liberation and war left no room to reflect on their faith, the believers voluntarily came together to push for the construction of a church. They personally carried sand and gravel from the banks of the Han River and fired bricks to complete a simple yet beautiful chapel. Notably, this church was built in the form of an auditorium without pillars in its interior space, embodying a precious characteristic of early Catholic architecture. After operating as a chapel for a long time, it was finally elevated to a parish in 1979, firmly establishing itself as a center of faith. Unfortunately, however, the church faced the threat of demolition due to the development of the Misa New Town in the 2000s. The faithful could not bear to watch the cathedral, imbued with the faith and spirit of their ancestors, vanish before their eyes. After much deliberation on various options, they made the difficult decision to relocate the building in its original form. This was a challenging decision that involved considering the financial burden of hundreds of millions of won as well as technical challenges. However, united by the earnest hearts of the parishioners, the nation's first relocation project finally began in December 2016. This involved attaching numerous wheels and rails beneath the building to move the entire cathedral, including the bell tower. Moving 15 meters a day for a total of 200 meters, the relocation to its current site was completed in just fifteen days. The moment the cathedral settled on new ground after its 200-meter journey, the fervent prayers offered in hushed silence turned into tears of joy, and the faithful praised God with one voice. This beautiful miracle—protecting the sanctuary, steeped in the sweat of our ancestors, without a single fingertip being harmed—and the beautiful miracle created by the power of faith and the devotion of the believers, stands today in its current location, bearing witness to the miracle.
