Potash mining began on the site as early as 1889. Starting in 1937, the Wehrmacht established the Army Munitions Depot. Used by the British after the war and later by the Bundeswehr, it is now a very well-preserved facility, used by the Hanover Tramway Museum (Hannoversche Strassenbahn-Museum e.V.).
