Teaching at the Right Level
Over the last 15 years, Pratham has developed and evolved an approach known as Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL). This methodology enables children to quickly acquire foundational skills, like reading and arithmetic. Regardless of age or grade, teaching starts at the learning level of the child. This method is the most effective for children who have already reached Grades 3, 4 or 5 but have not acquired foundational skills. Pratham’s innovative approach has helped kids learn to read in as little as 50 days. From Jammu and Kashmir to Tamil Nadu, the success of TaRL has lead to increased reading, and this method is now being used in Africa and 14 other countries across the world. In this video, Madhav Chavan, co-founder of Pratham, explains how the methodology is applied and why it is necessary. The clip also shows several classrooms in India where the program is being used.
