1 Corinthians 9:24–10:13 24 Do you not know that in the race all the runners run with all their might, but only one receives the prize? In the same way, you also run for the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They exercise self-control for a perishable crown, but we exercise self-control for an imperishable one. 26 So I do not run as if without a goal, nor fight as if beating the air. 27 I discipline my body and make it my slave so that I may preach the gospel to others, and that I myself may not be disqualified. 1 Brothers, I want you to know this: Our ancestors were all under the cloud and passed through the sea. 2 They were all baptized in the cloud and in the sea and were joined to Moses. 3 They all ate the same spiritual food. 4 They all drank the same spiritual water. They drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. 5 But God was not pleased with most of them, so they perished in the wilderness. 6 These things served as an example for us so that we would not become those who delight in evil like them. 7 Do not become idolaters like some of them. It is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to dance.” 8 Some of them committed sexual immorality, and 23,000 died in one day. Let us not commit sexual immorality as they did. 9 Some of them tested the Lord and were bitten by snakes and died. Let us not test Him as they did. 10 Some of them grumbled and were destroyed by the destroyer. Do not grumble as they did. 11 These things that happened to them were written as an example and a warning for us who live in the last days. 12 Therefore let anyone who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 You have never been tempted beyond what is acceptable to man.
