After mastering Acids and Oxides, it's time to unravel the third major inorganic function: Bases (also known as hydroxides). If you find it difficult to name them or write their chemical formulas, this video will save your grade! 🛑🚀 In today's lesson, we will logically understand the behavior of bases in aqueous solution and learn a foolproof trick to name each one without suffering. 🧪 What you will master in this lesson (Summary for your notebook): The Arrhenius Concept: Bases are substances that, when dissolved in water, release the hydroxide ion (OH-) as the only anion. Dissociation vs. Ionization: Remember that acids undergo ionization? Well, bases undergo DISSOCIATION (they only separate the ions that already exist!). See the examples of dissociation of NaOH, Ca(OH)2, and Al(OH)3 in the table. The Crossword Puzzle Rule: How to cross the charges of the cation (usually a metal) with the hydroxyl group (OH-) to assemble the formula of any base, such as magnesium hydroxide Mg(OH)2. Simplified Nomenclature: Understand once and for all why some bases end with Roman numerals (such as iron(II) hydroxide and iron(III) hydroxide) and others don't need them (such as sodium hydroxide). It all depends on whether the oxidation number is fixed or variable! Don't just try to memorize the reactions.
