Free State’s Clarens | You won’t regret coming here! 🇿🇦
We set off on another unforgettable overlanding and camping adventure — this time heading to the charming art village of Clarens in the heart of the Free State. Known as the “Jewel of the Free State,” Clarens is surrounded by golden sandstone mountains, wide open plains, and some of the most peaceful scenery you’ll find in #SouthAfrica. The road trip took us about 14 hours from #CapeTown through rolling farmlands and quiet towns as we made our way inland. The landscapes slowly changed from coastal views to vast open spaces, setting the tone for a relaxing countryside escape. We stayed at the beautiful Old Mill Drift Guest Farm (@oldmilldrift), a hidden gem 27km outside Clarens. Nestled along a tranquil Caledon river and surrounded by towering Poplar trees and sandstone cliffs, this campsite is perfect for overlanders and nature lovers alike. They also have other various accommodation options. The sound of birdlife, donkeys and rustling leaves made it the ideal place to unwind. We kicked off Day 1 with an early drive into the charming town of Clarens, where art galleries, local cafés, and unique shops give the town its vibrant character. Thereafter, we took a drive into the breath-taking Golden Gate Highlands National Park — one of South Africa’s most scenic national parks. Towering sandstone cliffs glowing in shades of gold, winding mountain roads, and dramatic landscapes made this an absolute highlight of the trip. We explored the park’s viewpoints, enjoyed a few short walks, and took in the incredible scenery that makes Golden Gate so iconic. This is a must-visit when you’re in the area. On Day 2 & 3, we spent our days exploring the farm, enjoying scenic hikes, relaxing by the natural swimming pool and chatting to other campers and the locals. Clarens offers the perfect balance. We enjoyed peaceful campfire nights under the stars and slow morning coffee. This trip reminded us that you don’t always need extreme terrain for a memorable overlanding experience — sometimes it’s about the simplicity and the setting. Here is the link to book at Old Mill Drift Guest Farm https://oldmilldrift.co.za/ Clarens and Old Mill Drift Guest Farm truly delivered a refreshing and scenic getaway, and it’s a secret paradise we’ll definitely return to. Our last night we spent in Nieu Bethesda enroute back to Cape Town. We stayed at the very cute Bethesda Tower Accommodation and had the most delicious lamb potjie at Stirlings @ The Ibis Restaurant.
