Welcome back to the studio! This week we're gonna be digging into the concept of scale outlines. I learned about this from watching Barry Harris' masterclass videos from the 80s and 90s and it's a super powerful tool for learning to understand, and more importantly, hear the harmony to jazz standards. I'll show you a scale outline I developed to play over Stella By Starlight and breakdown the whole thing for you, so you can understand why I chose the scales I did. We'll also explore adding chromaticism to this outline by making use of Barry's rules for descending scale lines. Then, we'll explore further by introducing an arpeggio built off the chord before running down the scale using the rules. Finally, we'll learn an etude over the chord changes that makes use of all these concepts and more!
