His fundamental thesis is that every being—a stone, a tree, a man, a star, a thought—is eternal. Not in the sense that it lasts forever in time, but in the sense that it can never become nothing. According to Severino, the entire Western civilization is founded on a belief he considers insane: the belief that things emerge from nothing and return to nothing. When we say that a person is born, we are implicitly saying that first they were not and then they are. When we say that they die, we are saying that they were and then they are no more. For Severino, this is the fundamental form of nihilism. The principle of non-contradiction, on the other hand, dictates that what is cannot be non-being and that what is not cannot be. If something exists, then its being is eternal. The appearance and disappearance of things are not their birth and destruction. They are merely their entry and exit from the horizon of appearance. A simple example: when the sun sets, we don't believe it is annihilated. It disappears from our field of vision, but it continues to exist. Severino radicalizes this intuition to the extreme: every being is like the sun. It is not produced from nothing and is not destroyed by nothing. It appears and disappears, but its being remains eternal. For this reason, he distinguishes between: the being of beings, which is eternal; the appearance of beings, which is temporal. We see becoming because we continually see entities appearing and disappearing. We therefore believe that they are created and destroyed. For Severino, this is an error of perspective. One of his most famous formulas is: "Beings are eternal." And another, even more radical: "Becoming is the appearance and disappearance of the eternal." This is why his thought is very different from Eckhart's. Eckhart seeks an original foundation beyond differences, a dimension in which the soul and God coincide. Severino does not seek any unifying foundation behind beings. On the contrary, he insists that every single being is eternal in its irreducible identity. The rose that withers, the child that is born, the mountain that crumbles, the thought that crosses the mind: none of this becomes nothing. Everything belongs eternally to the destiny of being.
