The Mississippi River Dropped in 1936, Revealing The Strangest Thing Ever Witnessed

In August of 1936, during the worst drought ever recorded in the central United States, the Mississippi River dropped to levels nobody alive had ever seen. Steamboat captains walked stretches of riverbed they had piloted boats over their entire careers. Local newspapers along the lower river described residents finding what they called pavement — smooth, fitted stone in straight lines, exposed by the falling water. Within weeks, the Army Corps of Engineers released water from upstream reservoirs and the river rose back over it. No federal expedition was sent. No academic paper was published. The photographs went into shoeboxes. This is what we know about the summer the Mississippi briefly showed something — and the institutional silence that closed over it.
