Hwang Mi-kyung and Seo Jong-won, a married couple, lived in a 100-square-foot (30-pyeong) apartment and had to pay heating bills exceeding 400,000 won (approximately $350 USD) every winter. Condensation and ventilation were also recurring issues. Deciding to build a house after retirement, the couple entrusted the construction to a longtime friend who was interested in eco-friendly housing. Instead of isolating the indoors and outdoors like a passive house, he proposed an eco-friendly house that actively utilizes sunlight and airflow. The completed house is more than twice the size of their previous home, yet heating costs remain the same or even decrease. This is the result of understanding and reflecting the principles of nature. The essence of the house can be found throughout. This house is designed around the vestibule, often called the "lungs of the house." This space is connected to the large cuckoo window on the second floor. Sunlight entering through the large window warms the air and induces convection. As the hot air is exhausted through the ceiling exhaust vents, fresh air enters the house, creating a so-called chimney effect, allowing the house to breathe. The thick insulation used in the construction of the house is highly dense and virtually impervious to heat, making it an excellent fire prevention solution. The moisture-proof film used in the foundation is strong enough to withstand the lifespan of the house. Furthermore, the diatomaceous earth covering the entire wall dampens odors, maintaining a comfortable atmosphere. In this way, each structure serves its own purpose, welcoming the four seasons. The window layout was also designed with both natural lighting and ventilation in mind. From the outside, the unique structure feels like a house within a house. Climbing the stairs reveals a light-filled space, and stepping inside, the airflow feels different. The greenhouse has added a new vitality to the couple's daily life. The spacious living area features folding doors that open and close easily to suit the temperature. The wife, who says this is her favorite space in the house, spends her days tending to her plants and moving them around to follow the sunlight. She plans to one day start a smart farm here, making her self-sufficient year-round. In this home, the couple is slowly and gradually shaping their post-retirement life together.
