Артемий Магун — о Реформации как основе либерализма
The new educational course "Politics: Hidden Meanings" at the Yeltsin Center opened on April 9 with a lecture by Artemy Magun, a leading scholar of political philosophy. His presentation, part of a larger series on the history of modern political thought, focused on the Reformation and the religious ideas that shaped what we today call liberalism in the 16th century. The course "Politics: Hidden Meanings," developed by the Yeltsin Center jointly with the Stasis Center for Practical Philosophy at the European University at St. Petersburg, also features leading contemporary Russian scholars and specialists in political theory, whose lectures will focus on the most influential thinkers of the modern era. "We've built this series around key figures in modern political thought and the lecturers," noted Magun, who curated the course. "The speakers will include both established scholars and those just beginning their careers. These will be individuals who will be lecturing about individuals." It's difficult to expect harmony in this course or for all the authors to agree with each other, as they represent different ideologies and schools of thought. However, I hope the series will be integrated. Those who attend it will gain an understanding of the intellectual development of the Western world, the foundations of our modern state, and the vectors of human development, as all institutions and all political discussions at the UN are still framed within the categories of Western political thought of the modern era. Moving on to the topic of his lecture, "The Political Philosophy of Protestantism: Luther and Calvin," Artemy Magun, professor, PhD in political science and philosophy at the University of Michigan and the University of Strasbourg, and head of the Stasis Center, pointed out that the 16th century witnessed two major global events that shaped the era. These were the Reformation, which began with the Christian theologian Martin Luther and democratized religion, and the Great Geographical Discoveries, which transformed the cultural and political horizons of the time.
