El genio que describió elementos que nadie había visto | Documental biográfico

In 1869, a professor in St. Petersburg published a table in which he left three cells blank. These weren't mistakes or oversights: they were predictions. He described in advance the weight, density, and behavior of three metals no one had ever seen, and all three turned up. One in the Pyrenees, another in Scandinavia, and the third in the mines of Saxony. This documentary traces the complete life of Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev, the chemist who brought order to the matter of the universe and whose periodic table, a century and a half later, still hangs in classrooms around the world. A ten-part biography that goes far beyond the discovery that made him famous. Here you will find: — His childhood in Tobolsk, deep in Siberia, as the youngest of seventeen children in a family that was impoverished, and the extraordinary figure of his mother, Maria Kornilev, who ran a glass factory, saved her family from poverty, and crossed half the empire so that her son could study. — The years of tuberculosis, the doctor's pronouncement at his bedside, and the encounter with surgeon Pirogov that gave him back his time. — Heidelberg, the makeshift laboratory in his rented apartment, the discovery of the absolute boiling point, and the Karlsruhe Congress that provided the key he needed. — The morning of February 17, 1869, with his suitcase packed and his car waiting, when he turned over a letter and wrote on the back the first sketch of the periodic table. — The gallium episode, when he corrected, by letter, the French chemist who had just discovered it, without ever having held the metal in his hands. — His great errors: the obsessive search for the ether, his distrust of atomism, his rejection of radioactivity and electrons. Because nothing is as instructive as the mistakes of a genius. — The balloon flight of August 7, 1887, when he dismissed the pilot and ascended alone to almost 4,000 meters to observe a total solar eclipse. — His rejection by the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences by a single vote, the public outcry that paradoxically transformed him into a national figure, his divorce, his marriage to Anna Popova, and the legendary Wednesdays when chemists, physicists, and painters like Repin, Shishkin, and Kuindzhi gathered at his home. — His work on petroleum, metrology, smokeless gunpowder, and Russian industry, as well as a dispassionate analysis of the myths surrounding his name: the dreamed-of periodic table and the supposed invention of vodka. — And the end: the three Nobel Prize nominations that never resulted in an award, his death in 1907, and that unforgettable funeral where students carried the periodic table aloft, ahead of the coffin, like a banner. A rigorous account, constructed from historical sources, about one of the most multifaceted thinkers of the nineteenth century: chemist, physicist, metrologist, economist, aeronaut, educator, and advisor to governments. A man who belonged to one hundred and twenty-one academies and scientific societies, yet was never admitted to that of his own country.
