The warm spirit of the people of Gevgelija still remembers the legend of a dervish who came and did not want to leave Gevgelija because he liked the place very much. The residents did not want to receive him and decided to expel him by force. Enraged by that, the dervish started angrily cursing the inhabitants who got scared and called him back with the words gel-geri which means come back. Although it is a legend, the people of Gevgelija do not want to break the oath of their ancestors - to always welcome those who decide to introduce their ideas in the city, those who are ready for new challenges, for new experiences. The old chronicles record that Gevgelija as a city began to develop from the middle of the 19th century, when the population of these parts felt the need to create a modern settlement that would defy passers-by merchants and host their trips to the Middle East with numerous years. In that period of time, the Vardar river, although navigable, could not satisfy the transport of goods, so in 1873 the railway line Thessaloniki - Skopje was built. Gevgelija got its real city character in 1886, when it became the center of a special kaza - Gevgeliska. From this period of time, many agricultural products thrived here, thanks to the favorable climate and fertile land, and were exported through the port of Thessaloniki. However, the economic development of Gevgelija is preferred in the period from 1860 to 1912, when manufacturing and industrial production developed, and the city, also known as the city - from the station to the border - will be even more famous for its numerous craft shops: shoemakers, wheelwrights, carpenters, blacksmiths. , dressmakers.
