The western segment of SR 178 runs from Bakersfield through the Kern River Canyon, past Lake Isabella, and over Walker Pass into the Mojave Desert. It’s one of only three Sierra Nevada crossings south of Yosemite, making it a vital link between the San Joaquin Valley and the upper Mojave Desert. In the 1890s a dirt road was built through Kern Canyon by Edison Electric to construct the Kern River #1 powerhouse (completed in 1907). At the time, this hydroelectric plant was the largest in the world, with a 118-mile transmission line to Los Angeles.
