Via ferrata Carlo Giorda - Sacra di San Michele (TO) 4K
It was my very first experience on a via ferrata, over 10 years ago, so when Francesco suggested—on a very windy November day—that we retrace our steps, I couldn't resist. You park your car in a clearing right in front of the large sign indicating the beautiful, long, and not-so-difficult via ferrata. You cross the road towards the Sacra and immediately, a little higher up on the left, you'll see the rubber cables where the hike begins. The via ferrata is rated moderately difficult and, in fact, doesn't have particularly physical, exposed, or overhanging sections, but it pleasantly climbs the 600 meters of elevation gain that lead to the famous Sacra di San Michele. It also consists of multiple sections, and if I'm not mistaken, there are two escape routes. Clearly, in the conditions we encountered, with winds gusting over 100 km/h, the via ferrata became a decidedly more thrilling experience (at times we clung to the cables simply to avoid flying off towards Turin). Unlike when I first climbed it, a long, 80-meter Tibetan bridge has recently been added. It's very high and steep, but well-made. The bridge is fun and adrenaline-pumping, especially when you have to change your lanyard while hanging between one section and the next. The via ferrata faces northwest, so the sun rarely shines. Once you reach the top, to reach the Sacra (main entrance), you have to go around it, following the path counterclockwise until you reach the paved road and then climb back up towards the main gates. Since we were there, we obviously visited it, for €8 each. The descent is along the old mule track that leads from the paved road first to the Borgata San Pietro and then to the village of Sant'Ambrogio di Torino (about 1 hour). Via ferrata difficulty: Moderately difficult. As mentioned above, it's not difficult, but it is long (the sign says 5 to 6 hours - we took 2 hours, going fairly quickly). For the route map, find me on Strava or Garmin (Fabio Mochettaz). Total Trip: about 750 meters of elevation gain, about 650 of which is via ferrata (the loop, including the descent, is about 6 km in total). Enjoy!
