What is a homeland? A country you only owe, or a place where you and your children feel safe and secure? During my 28 years in Germany, I've made many mistakes. Some cost me money, some cost me time, and some could have been avoided if I'd known then what I understand today. In this video, I'll tell two real stories of people who came to Germany but decided to return. Why does one person find their place in a new country, while another can't accept a foreign language, rules, and way of life? Is leaving a betrayal of one's homeland—or does everyone have the right to seek a better place? And then we'll discuss nine costly mistakes emigrants make: why you shouldn't put off learning a language, the dangers of only associating with your own people, why it's hard to escape a low-paying job, how nostalgia prevents you from making a new country your home, and why Germany isn't a country of easy money. I'll also tell you what Germans save on, why emigrants shouldn't compete with each other, and why a new country isn't automatically obligated to make us happy. I'm not advocating for anyone to leave or stay. This is an honest conversation about moving, adapting, regrets, courage, and the price of a new life.
