The story of Abraham and Isaac is one of the most difficult passages in Scripture. Rather than reading it simply as a test of Abraham's faith, this sermon invites us to consider a different question: What are we being called to place on the altar? Through the imagery of sacrifice, the sermon explores the ways our need for control, certainty, comfort, and being right can keep us from the freedom Christ offers. Drawing on the Hebrew concept of Akedah ("to bind"), the message points us toward a deeper willingness to seek Christ in all things and trust that God will provide a new way forward.
