Nero envisioned a residence truly exceptional, befitting an emperor: The Golden House, or Domus Aurea in Latin. This illustrious palace boasted over 200 rooms, forming an enormous architectural and landscaped complex spanning 80 hectares in the heart of Rome, covering a quarter of the city! Nero established his opulent home east of the city center on the Oppian Hill. The Domus Aurea stretched across several hills, from the Palatine to the Esquiline. The main facade faced south to bask in sunlight all day long. Visitors were greeted by a rectangular artificial lake, surrounded by service rooms. The palace featured baths and monumental fountains, requiring vast amounts of water. The construction of the Domus Aurea was an extraordinary project, designed to amaze and impress with its great technical feats. It was the high-tech house of its day.
