The reason was neither the public interest of the State nor any improvement in the offer's terms. It was because Begoña Gómez had demanded the sale be aborted. The reason is as clear as it is scandalous: IE Business School, the private university where Begoña Gómez directed the Africa Center, had its headquarters leased in that very complex. The institution was even considering the possibility of acquiring one of the properties. A sale to a private fund would jeopardize that advantageous position. And to prevent this, a single phone call from Koldo—the all-powerful advisor to José Luis Ábalos—was enough to bring the deal to a halt. We're not talking about routine management or a legitimate interest defended through institutional channels. We're talking about the Prime Minister's wife using the levers of power—through a network already under investigation for corruption—to protect the interests of the institution that gave her a leadership position. IE Business School placed her at the head of the Africa Center in August 2018, barely two months after Pedro Sánchez arrived at La Moncloa (the Prime Minister's residence). Since then, her influence seems to have extended to blocking a multi-million euro sale of public assets. Meanwhile, the parallel contract that Aldama signed stipulated 50 million euros in hidden commissions. The deal reeked of corruption from the start. But the only veto that worked wasn't legality or the public interest: it was Begoña Gómez's. That's what's truly frightening. Not the windfall that wasn't made, but the one that was prevented because someone, from the highest echelons of power, decided it wasn't in "their" university's best interest. Spain deserves to know the true extent of this influence and who is responsible for it. Because being the president's wife is one thing, but acting as if the state were an extension of one's own private interests is quite another.
