GIF E&T Webinar 110: Overview of the various UK NNL activities

This webinar was streamed live on 18 March 2026 and featured a presentation by Dr Michael Edmondson, Dr Seddon Atkinson and Ms Nassia Tzelepi. The UK development of nuclear technologies parallels that seen globally, as such there is a long history of research and development into a wide range of reactors and nuclear fuel cycles. UK National Nuclear Laboratory is the UK’s lead civil national laboratory for nuclear fission, delivering nuclear science to benefit society UK’s home of fission. The UK has ambitious plans for ‘a golden age of nuclear’; this presentation will describe the UK energy context and the range of activities that UKNNL are undertaking to ensure that we have the skills, capability, knowledge and technology to ensure that we can meet this challenge. In this webinar we will present the need to maintain our capability to support existing reactors – from fuel production to waste disposal, our Advanced Modular Reactor Programmes and our enabling activities such as chemical, process and fuel cycle modelling. The session was facilitated by Dr. Patricia Paviet (PNNL, USA), lead of the GIF Education and Training Webinar Series. This webinar is part of the ongoing GIF ETWG Education and Training Series, launched in 2016. To date, more than 100 webinars have been streamed, reaching participants from over 80 countries.
