NATO EUROPEA DIVISA, RUSSIA E CINA COMPLICANO LA STRATEGIA DELL’OCCIDENTE | PAOLO GIORDANI
On IlSussidiario.tv, Paolo Giordani, lawyer and president of the International Diplomatic Institute (IDI), analyzes the war in Ukraine, US-China relations, the strengthening of NATO's European pillar, and Donald Trump's strategy. 00:00 Introduction: China, the United States, and the war in Ukraine 05:22 European defense, NATO, and relations with Russia 12:51 Trump, Putin, and military support for Ukraine 17:47 Conclusions: Russian security and the difficulties of negotiations During the interview, Giordani interprets Donald Trump's accusations against China—unsupported by public evidence—that Beijing illegally acquired the data of 220 million US voters as primarily a domestic political move ahead of the November 2026 midterm elections. According to Giordani, Beijing places greater importance on facts than on statements, particularly regarding tariffs, sanctions, trade, and the US military presence in the Indo-Pacific. A further deterioration in relations between Washington and Beijing would further complicate a potential Chinese mediation role in the war in Ukraine. Regarding the future of NATO's European pillar, Giordani argues that increasing military spending is not enough: we need to "spend better," coordinating defense industries, technical standards, and weapons systems. The main obstacle, in his view, is the political divide between Central and Eastern European countries, which perceive Russia as a direct threat, and Southern European countries, which are more cautious for economic and energy reasons. Giordani believes that, at present, there are no indications of an imminent Russian attack on Europe. Regarding Trump's strategy, Giordani sees no substantial change: the United States continues to engage with Moscow, aims to prevent Kiev's collapse, and is gradually shifting a growing share of the cost of military support to its European allies. In this approach, Washington retains political and strategic leadership, while Europe finances the purchase of weapons for Ukraine. Negotiations remain difficult, also because Moscow considers it essential to maintain a "security cordon" along its borders and, according to Giordani, has no intention of returning Donbass.
