Though Jethro doesn’t actually recall proposing to Essiebelle in those letters, he quickly warms up to the idea of marriage and starts looking forward to it. However, Jed isn’t convinced that Jethro is ready for such a commitment. Determined to prepare for the occasion, the family heads into town to buy a ring. Meanwhile, Essiebelle tries to confess to her father that her heart belongs to Mel Pratt, a boy back in the hills, but Lafe refuses to listen. While the Clampetts are out, Elly’s mischievous chimp allows Lafe and Essiebelle into the mansion, setting the stage for more confusion. The family returns home just as Marian Billington from Beverly Caterers arrives for her date with Jethro. However, when she learns about Essiebelle, she promptly leaves, leaving Jethro stunned. His shock only deepens when he finally lays eyes on Essiebelle and realizes she has gained quite a bit of weight since their last meeting. In a panic, Jethro abandons his engagement plans and takes off running after Marian. Seeing Essiebelle upset, Jed steps in to comfort her, and she finally confesses that she’s actually in love with Mel. Meanwhile, Granny and Lafe return with Jethro, still expecting the wedding to go forward. Jed and Essiebelle, realizing they need a plan to stop it, put their heads together to come up with a way to convince Lafe to call off the wedding himself.
