2 weight on a stillwater. Why?

A 7 weight rod is more suited for large Atlantic Salmon than UK trout. Stiff rods, thick lines, heavy tippets are why people have injuries and why there are trout swimming around with hooks in their mouths. You spook more, lose more using heavy gear. Sunray champion light tippets, dull tippets, thin fly lines, rods that bend and lineslik to create high floating, easy lifting, far casting outfits. When people play fish on 7 weights they are only using the top 1/4 of the rod. Next time you see someone on a 7, look. Only the top of the rod is bent when playing a fish often. The rest of the rod is too stiff. Fish are lost by stiff rods snapping 6,7,8, lb tippet. Tippets get smashed by the rod, being overly stiff, not the fish pulling too hard. A rod that gives progressively distributes the fight evenly. Here I am using 3lb tippet with a soft rod, belting it out into a wind and landing gently. Correct, gear below 4 weight is not ideally suited to sinking lines and heavier gear still has a place. No one wants to chuck large lures on sinking lines with light gear, but even then you can pair down. Thinner lines and softer rods work in any weight. All Sunray lines, in any weight have thinner front tapers than other lines 3 weights lighter. So the landing is gentle. Even on a 7. Our running lines, same, thinnest on the market, meaning the effort you put in casting isn’t stolen by drag on the way out. You can use rods with less stiffness to cast further. Simple physics.
