The anticipated eruption on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula came after weeks of seismic activity, even though there isn't a volcano as such. The first images are spectacular: lava fountains spreading laterally and orange smoke rising into the sky. The eruption began last night, around 10:17 PM, 4 km northeast of the municipality of Grindavik. The village had been evacuated in November due to frequent earthquakes and severe ground deformation.
