UK: DRUMCREE: ORANGE ORDER PARADE LATEST (V)
(3 Jul 1999) Voice and effects Heavy fortifications have been built around Drumcree parish church in Northern Ireland, to prevent Protestant Orangemen parading from there down the mainly catholic Garvaghy Road on Sunday. The Orangemen are angry at being denied for the second year running access to the route their predecessors have paraded down since 1807. As tension mounts in the town, Catholic residents of the Garvaghy Road released a book telling of their experiences living in what is becoming a combat zone. VOICE-OVER: 00:02 Protestant Orangemen will attempt to march along the Catholic section of the Garvaghy Road on Sunday, even though the march has been officially banned by the British government. With hundreds of loyalists from across the province planning to join the Portadown Orangemen on Drumcree Hill, the security forces are taking no chances. 00:18 Riots broke out on Garvaghy Road two years ago, when talks to try to stop the parade failed and the march went ahead. The half mile stretch of road remains pitted and scarred by scorch marks left by petrol bombs. 00:33 These memories are fresh in the minds of local residents, who have written a book about their experiences. One resident explained how they are dealing with the crisis. 00:45 SOUNDBITE: (English) "It's a very stressful time but we are a very strong community and a few weeks up to this here we have taken on trauma workshops, we've also done relaxation mornings to help us cope with all our stress and pressure that we don't carry it into the home." SUPER CAPTION: Claire, local resident and contributor to the book 01:01 Locals are angry that a solution has still not been found to the annual stand-off - and another outbreak of violence in Portadown would make matters worse. Authorities are well prepared for Sunday's march and this picturesque corner of County Armagh is beginning to look like a war zone. A six metre high steel and iron barricade has been welded into place, topped by thick coils of razor wire. The fortifications continue into the fields which run between the church and Garvaghy Road, both ends of which were sealed off by concrete roadblocks on Friday. 01:35 - VISION ENDS Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
