أكاديمي: ترمب لن يغفر لأوروبا تخليها عنه في حرب إيران.. وضم غرينلاند يهدد وحدة الناتو

US President Donald Trump arrived at the NATO summit in Ankara on Tuesday still furious with allies who refused to help him in his war against Iran, and determined to make his anger known, according to Axios. The website noted that Trump has publicly questioned, for years, the strength, loyalty, and competence of America's closest allies, and their worthiness of the protection they have relied on since World War II. It added that the refusal of some allies to open air bases for US strikes on Iran, or to send troops to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, has only intensified Trump's skepticism of the alliance, turning it into outright contempt. The website explained that Trump spent the weeks following a war with Iran publicly criticizing European leaders, including those who believed their personal relationships with him would shield them from his wrath. Trump mocked Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, claiming she "begged" him for a photo at the G7 summit, before posting a satirical image of her on Monday with the caption: "Restrictive Order Wanted." The news of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's resignation was also announced, with the report describing him as weak and suggesting that his hesitation on Iran showed he was "no Winston Churchill." Axios added that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, one of Trump's key advisors in Europe, failed last month to sway the US president when he presented him with a chart highlighting what he called "Trump's trillion" in allied defense spending. The website noted that Trump, who reportedly considered boycotting the NATO summit entirely, dismissed the idea, saying, "We don't need their money—we don't need anything. I just want loyalty." It explained that concerns are growing in Europe that Trump's disregard for allies will impact the US military presence on the continent. The report indicated that the US Department of Defense has already reduced the number of US Army combat brigades in Europe from four to three and canceled a planned deployment of approximately 4,000 troops to Poland. The United States has also taken steps to reduce the number of aircraft, tankers, and warships available to NATO in the event of a crisis, forcing Europe to plan for a war with less American firepower. The website reported that US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced last month a six-month review of US forces in Europe, calling allies "shameful" for refusing to grant their bases access to Iran for strikes. A US official was quoted as saying the review could lead to adjustments in Europe, while another US official said that "reducing NATO forces is not on the table" at the summit, but added: "The president is not happy with the Europeans. It's the same old story." US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker told reporters on Sunday that Trump would urge allies to accelerate their progress toward achieving defense spending equivalent to 5 percent of GDP, as part of a broader goal, he said, of shifting "the burden of conventional defense from Europe" to Europe and Canada. The website added that another US administration official clarified during the same call that Trump remains determined to reclaim Greenland from Denmark, considering it "the best way to meet NATO's defense needs" because it would enable the US to contain Russia in the Arctic, a move opposed by Denmark and its NATO allies. In a related development, Trump is meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, one of the few NATO leaders who still enjoys his favor. The website noted that the repercussions of the Iranian crisis will also cast a shadow over this meeting, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked Trump, during a private session on Friday, to refrain from selling Turkey advanced weapons systems, citing the escalating anti-Israel rhetoric from Erdoğan. On Wednesday, Trump will participate in a working session for NATO leaders and will also hold bilateral meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
