Brave Little Ayana Jumps Right at the Boys to Calm Them Down

A lively day at the Bristol Zoo Project as the youngsters mimic the adults with chest beats, wrestling, and some very brave jumps.    • Gorilla Kala With Her Baby Boy Hasani   Watch the gorilla troop from Bristol Zoo Project. Since I filmed Kala last she has come out of her shell quite a bit. She is now confident enough to beat her chest at the others. Touni isn't happy about it and charges in front of Kala. What the adults can do the youngsters can do. Juni and Hasani have a chest beat and start wrestling each other. When it gets a bit too rowdy, Juni's timid Ayana puts on her brave face and literally jumps at Hasani. The boys start again, Ayana moves and they stop for a second, but now it seems Kala is standing guard for her son Hasani. Ayana moves, which relaxes Kala again. Later Hasani is sunbathing and Juni is up the tree. I have been unsuccessfully trying to get a closer look at Juni's teeth/tooth properly. He seems to have a front tooth that is enormous, but looking at it frame by frame it might just look big because he lost his other teeth. When looking it up it said a young gorilla starts losing baby teeth around 3 to 4 years and does not fully finish getting adult teeth until they are close to maturity. Hasani seems to be the only one that loves dipping his feet in the moat at the moment. It will be interesting to see in the summer if they make more use of it. It has a slope so they can actually use it without being in danger. I did hear a lot of people saying, "Can't gorillas swim?" Actually, gorillas find it really difficult or impossible to swim because of how they are built. They have incredibly dense muscle and very little body fat, which means they don't float at all. Their heavy upper bodies also make it hard to keep their balance in deep water. You will usually see them wading in the shallows or using a stick to check the depth, but they definitely prefer to keep their feet on solid ground. Juni is up and down the tree.
