We’ll unwrap everything, get it on the rails, and give it a gentle crawl, a flat-out blast, then a final slow run on my temporary setup. Model Overview: Hornby BR 60022 Mallard (A4 Class) Design & Prototype Background The Hornby model represents LNER Class A4 4468 “Mallard”, renumbered BR 60022 in British Railways service. It’s the same locomotive that set the world steam-speed record of 126 mph on 3 July 1938, a record still unbeaten today. Built at Doncaster Works under designer Sir Nigel Gresley, Mallard served until April 1963 and is now preserved at the National Railway Museum, York. Model Production & History Hornby released this version of Mallard (running number 60022) in several periods, notably between 1989–1990 and 1992–1993, including both solo and train-set formats. Across those years, up to 48,500 models were produced, though only around 1,500 were included within sets. The model length is about 291 mm (approximately 11.5 inches). Technical Specs (Hornby R3737 Era 4 Version in BR Blue) Scale & Gauge: OO gauge (1:76) Length: ~438 mm (model specification; there may be small variations) Minimum Curve Radius: Hornby 2nd radius (~438 mm) DCC Capability: DCC ready—with an 8-pin socket—for future digital upgrades. Livery: British Railways Early Crest in BR blue, a striking and historically significant presentation.
