It stands out as one of the best universities in Latin America and one of the most active in the arts, technology, and research fields. It maintains a very selective acceptance rate for applicants to higher education, due to high demand and its public, secular, and tuition-free nature. Furthermore, it has the largest student enrollment of all universities in Latin America and one of the largest campuses in the world. Its numerous publications and research projects in all areas of knowledge make it the Mexican institution with the greatest scientific output. All Mexican Nobel Prize laureates have attended this institution of learning. It was founded in 1910 as the National University of Mexico by Justo Sierra, who wished to revive a liberal version of the defunct Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico; the oldest university in North America. UNAM gained its autonomy in 1929, giving it the ability to self-manage its budget, administration, and curriculum without government interference. The construction of its main campus south of Mexico City, known as Ciudad Universitaria (CU), was carried out by some of the most prominent Mexican architects and artists of the 20th century. In 2007, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is also considered one of the most attractive campuses for tourism in the world.
