A Day in My Life: On a Driven Shoot in Dorset

The alarm rings early, but the excitement of the day ahead makes the sleepiness disappear. By first light, the Dorset countryside is alive with mist curling over the rolling fields… well actually thick bloody fog! Today’s agenda: a driven shoot. I drive through sleepy villages (or I sleepily drive through the villages, whichever you prefer!) leads me to the meet point. The anticipation is tangible; dogs are eager, guns are ready, and the beaters gather, chatting quietly, checking equipment. There’s a rhythm to it all—a silent understanding of what’s about to unfold… well that’s what Jilly Cooper or some such writer would say! The crack of a gun are heard across the fields, the occasional shout signals a flush, and all around, the countryside feels alive in a way only a day like this can make it. It’s demanding, exhilarating, and I am profoundly connected to the land… mostly by the mud on my feet holding me in place. By mid-afternoon, the shoot winds down, due to the rain and wind! And we all go off for a hearty meal… well the guns do, you’ll have to watch to see how amazing the beaters food is. As the sun dips low, the day comes to a close and I begin my exciting jobs. Guess what! You get to come along to it all. Want more? Tell me. Got an idea? Post it in the comments. Want to help us keep doing what we do?
