I Spoke Once in Ten Years. They Called It Virtue. || Xi Gui || 息妫
They sang loudly on stage. Because women were never allowed to speak softly in real life. Tonight, Xi Gui speaks for herself. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Three states went to war over one woman. Two kingdoms fell because of her face. One county in Henan Province kept her name for three thousand years and never changed it. She was ranked the greatest beauty of the Spring and Autumn period. Number four on that list was Xi Shi — the woman who brought down the state of Wu. Xi Gui was number one. Sima Qian wrote about her in the Shiji. Not about her battles. She fought none. He wrote: to be born this beautiful is its own kind of punishment. Tonight, she finally tells you what that punishment actually looked like. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🕯️ ABOUT THIS EPISODE Xi Gui (息妫) was a princess of the state of Chen (陈国) during the Spring and Autumn period (春秋时代, approximately 770–476 BCE). She married the lord of Xi (息侯), a small state in the central plains. When Cai Ai Hou (蔡哀侯), lord of the neighboring state of Cai and husband of her sister, behaved disrespectfully toward her, the lord of Xi engineered his humiliation through Chu — without consulting Xi Gui. King Wen of Chu (楚文王) saw Xi Gui at a diplomatic banquet. He returned with an army. Xi fell. Xi Gui was taken to the Chu palace as a royal consort. Her husband became a stable groom in his conqueror's court. For three years, Xi Gui did not speak to King Wen of Chu. When she finally spoke, she said she could not serve two masters with any virtue. King Wen of Chu took her words as justification to invade Cai. The second kingdom fell. Later generations called her Tao Hua Fu Ren (桃花夫人) — the Lady of the Peach Blossom. They built her a temple. They praised her silence as chastity. They praised her endurance as virtue. They never asked what she had actually wanted. The Zuo Zhuan (左传) places her at the center of both collapses without ever calling her the cause — but arranges the events so that every reader draws that conclusion. This episode examines how that arrangement works. And what it costs the woman inside it. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎙️ ABOUT HUSH AND LORE Hush and Lore tells the stories of historical women in their own voice. First-person monologues.
