I've been using the MPC Sample heavily since it launched, and while I absolutely love the immediacy of the workflow, I kept running into situations where I wanted to quickly process, resample, and manipulate one shots without interrupting the creative flow. Ironically, the solution ended up coming from a workflow I was already using years ago with the MPC 2500 the SP-404MKII, and eventually Ableton Live. In this video, I show how I've been using the SP-404MKII as a dedicated resampling and sound design companion for the MPC Sample, allowing me to quickly process one shots, add effects, compress, resample, and move ideas forward. What's interesting is that this exact workflow can also be accomplished entirely inside a DAW. The SP-404MKII just happens to make the process feel more immediate. I also briefly touch on how I physically set this workflow up using a patch bay. If you're interested in the routing side of things, I have a separate video where I break down my entire patch bay setup. I definitely still hope AKAI improves the resampling workflow on the MPC Sample in future updates, because I think the device is incredibly close to being the perfect portable sampling instrument for my workflow. Until then, this has become one of my favorite ways to get around those limitations while staying creative. Shoutout to The Crates Motel, whose video on the MPC Sample and SP-404MKII workflow also helped informed how I think about and present some of these ideas. At the end of the video, I put together a quick beat using some of the processed one shots created during the session to see how the workflow translates into an actual track.
