This Hike Lives Up to the Hype | Indian Head Adirondacks
This hike came on my second full day in the Adirondacks, after tackling Porter and Cascade, two of the High Peaks, the day before. I was already feeling the miles in my legs, but nothing could have prepared me for what this trail had in store. What started as another day on the map quickly turned into one of the best hikes I did in all of 2025. Because of its popularity, this hike requires a reservation, and while it might feel like a hassle at first, it was absolutely worth it. I set out in mid-summer, greeted by perfect Adirondack weather, cool air, blue skies, and highs hovering in the 60s… at least for now. The trail begins innocently enough, with gradual hiking through a golf course and an old dirt road, easing you in before reality sets in. After crossing the stream, the hike changes fast, trading gentle miles for serious elevation gain, rugged terrain, and a seemingly endless stretch of waterfalls cascading through the forest. Waterfall after waterfall, this hike felt like the Ricketts Glen of New York, delivering nonstop scenery long before the final payoff. By the end of roughly 12 miles, this trail had completely exceeded my expectations. From the approach to the climb and finally the iconic view waiting at the top, this was the kind of hike that reminds you why places like the Adirondacks hold such a legendary reputation. Enough talking, let’s get to hiking.
