Uncensored information is in your hands! In a massive challenge to the interim authorities' intimidation tactics, the Venezuelan Federation of Teachers (FVM) and a coalition of eight union federations managed to paralyze more than 70% of the 31,278 public educational institutions across the country during a 12-hour protest. From early morning, the country's main regions, including Zulia, Carabobo, Sucre, and Bolívar, reported a near-total absence of students and teachers. The teachers' union denounced that school administrators and district authorities attempted to suppress the action through threats of dismissal and paltry salary deductions of a mere 12 bolivars. Even more serious, the federations strongly rejected the unconstitutional presence of Bolivarian National Police (PNB) officers inside schools, a measure aimed at sowing fear in a sector that already has numerous educators who have become political prisoners. The protest moved forcefully to the gates of the Ministry of Labor in Plaza Caracas, where educators—joined by the university sector, which extended its strike for another 24 hours—demanded an immediate statement from the minister. Union leaders demanded that all bonuses be indexed to real wages, as stipulated in Article 104 of the Constitution, and denounced the discrimination suffered by retirees and pensioners, who receive significantly lower allowances than active employees. Teachers also raised their voices against the energy crisis that is disrupting school days in rural areas, demanding that "the lights be restored" to classrooms that spend seven to eight consecutive hours in darkness due to frequent blackouts, making learning impossible in unbearable temperatures. The unions warned that they will begin an evaluation phase to escalate their actions with labor inspectorates and the Ombudsman's Office.
