This episode of Gulliver features TMEIC, an electrical equipment manufacturer supporting industrial infrastructure. Electricity generated by solar panels is direct current and therefore cannot be used in homes or factories. A power conditioner is a device that converts direct current (DC) electricity into alternating current (AC). TMEIC's high-capacity power conditioners boast industry-leading conversion efficiency. To reduce losses during electricity conversion, the device's internal circuitry has been refined, and control technology has been enhanced to maximize the electricity generated by solar panels. These devices are installed in solar power plants around the world, and are said to support the electricity needs of up to approximately 15 million ordinary households, or a quarter of the households in Japan. TMEIC also boasts a top-class market share in industrial motors. Motors are said to account for approximately 40-50% of the world's electricity consumption. TMEIC has reviewed the internal structure and cooling mechanisms of motors to reduce energy loss. Furthermore, they are developing next-generation motors that do not use magnets, and are venturing into new fields such as the electrification of ships. TMEIC, which develops electrical equipment for manufacturing plants, was formed in 2003 through the business integration of Toshiba and Mitsubishi Electric. Capturing the expansion of the renewable energy market, TMEIC achieved the world's top sales in power conditioners in 2014. In recent years, they have also expanded into the hydrogen energy business, and are working on a project in Laos to roast coffee using hydrogen produced by hydroelectric power. This program explores TMEIC's challenge to create a sustainable society by efficiently generating and using electricity that supports social infrastructure.
