2017 Rickenbacker 4003s pre and post-modification - Paul Gray, The Damned

www.paulgraybassonline.com Here's a quick vid of before and after modifications to my 2017 4003s. No trickery here, it's simply plugged straight into a 20 watt Fender Champ and filmed on a propped-up iphone. After decades of playing 4001's I fell for a Midnight Blue 4003s earlier this year but the sound across the board was a little too "scooped"* for me - I wanted more punch and warmth in the sound, so had the neck pup replaced with a Konig (www.retrovibe.co.uk) hi-gain 12k job and wired so both pups in phase with each other. It passed the test with flying colours on our recent US tour through my vintage Ampeg rig, so I've just bought this one in ruby red and had the same mods completed. I'm not expecting a cinematography award anytime soon, but hope this helps those who may be considering similar modifications. *I usually use both bass and treble pups on full, but rolling off the bass a tad can give more overall punch...it still didn't quite do it for me tho, hence the mods. My 4003s's are VERY different sounding to my vintage 4001's dating from 1974 - 1980 , which have MUCH more top end clank and lower overall output.
