Twitter @juangangel Dairy cows and other animals such as sheep, goats, buffalo, camels, and giraffes are herbivores whose diets consist primarily of plant matter. Many herbivores are also ruminants. Ruminants are easily identified because they chew their food extensively even when not eating. This chewing action is called rumination and is part of the process that allows the ruminant to obtain energy, also called fiber, from the cell walls of plants. The reticulum and rumen are the primary stomachs of ruminants. The contents of the reticulum are mixed with those of the rumen almost continuously (once per minute). Both stomachs share a dense population of microorganisms (bacteria, protozoa, and fungi) and are often called the "reticulorumen." The rumen is a large fermentation vessel that can hold up to 100–120 kg of digesting matter. Fiber particles remain in the rumen for 20 to 48 hours because bacterial fermentation is a slow process.
