The Practice Habit That Is Quietly Keeping You at the Same Level
None of these feel wrong while you are doing them. That is what makes them so effective at keeping you stuck. 📅 Free piano strategy consultation: https://kylepwalker.com/piano-lab/con... 🔁 7-Day Practice Reset: https://kylepwalker.com/practice-reset 📋 Free 30-Day Practice Plan: http://kylepwalker.com/practice-plan 🎹 Piano lessons and coaching: https://kylepwalker.com/piano-lab ▶️ Performance channel: /@kylepwalker I want to talk about three specific practice habits that are not obviously wrong. If they were, nobody would be doing them. They feel like diligence and consistency. Many serious pianists have been doing them for years, wondering why the results are not matching the effort. The first is starting from the beginning every time, which means the opening of a piece always gets the most practice and the ending gets the least. The second is playing through mistakes instead of stopping to fix them, which trains you to continue after an error rather than removing it. The third is measuring practice by how long you sat at the piano instead of what actually improved. Each one feels productive. None of them efficiently produces real progress. I cover why they happen, why they feel right, and the specific fix for each. I perform as a concert pianist and teach at NYU Steinhardt.
